Valteri Bottas claimed his maiden win today, battling the Scuderia of Vettel to win an otherwise dull race that saw almost zero overtakes.
The Tarmac at Sochi is extremely smooth, which does not affect the tyres much. The one stop race hardly sees action and same was the case even this year. Despite topping the first two steps of the podium, the Ferraris could not stop Bottas from passing both the cars before turn 2 as the Finn got off to a brilliant start, devoid of any wheel spin. His team mate, Hamilton on the other hand had a relatively lonely race at fourth, continuing his form from the practice and qualifying sessions. It was also Raikkonen’s first podium this year, after having been disappointing with the results so far.
Ricciardo and Alonso finished with zero points. Ricciardo faced overheating issues with the right rear tyre and had to retire after his pit crew scrutinised the situation. Alonso on the other hand failed to even start the race as the Honda engine once again gave up.
The circus now heads to Catalunya, Spain where the action will continue on May 12.
